Between Without Borders / Both Sides of the Border Face East

A multilingual, transnational project dedicated to exploring responsibility, writing, and translation in Central and Eastern Europe, with a particular focus on Ukraine.

The project took place in Ukraine from 23 June to 2 July 2023, featuring an international workshop at the Nazar Voitovych Art Residency in the Ternopil region and a series of public events in Lviv.

As part of the programme, discussions, poetry and prose readings of original texts and translations were held at the Scientific Library of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv on 30 June and 1 July.

The public programme included:

The literary discussion "Durable Words" ("Довічні слова")

The discussion "Writing Through Violence" ("Писання через насильство")

The art exhibition "Between Without Borders" at the HallArtHall exhibition space in the Hnat Khotkevych Palace of Culture.

Discussion Moderators: Ihor Petriy (Scientific Library of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine) and Alisa Sloter (University of Redlands, USA).

Discussion Speakers: Danilo Ilnytskyi (Ukrainian Catholic University, Ukraine), Zsuzsa Selyem (Babes-Bolyai University, Romania), Ostap Slyvynskyi (Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine), Marci Shore (Yale University, USA), Yaroslav Hrytsak (Ukrainian Catholic University, Ukraine), Yurko Prokhasko, and Volodymyr Yermolenko (Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukraine).

Participating Artists: Astian Rey, Eva Alvor, Anna Vereshchak, Oleksandra Luniova, Larysa Boruta, Lyusya Nichai, Serhiy Dekalyuk, Marianna Maslova, Masha Vyshedska, Oleh Panasiuk, Svitlana Redkach, Roksolana Uhryniuk, Yaroslav Leonets, Olena Kainska.

The "Between Without Borders / Both Sides of the Border Face East" project was developed and organised by Yuliya Sushytska (Occidental College, Los Angeles) with the support of the Nazar Voitovych Art Residency / NVAIR (Ternopil region, Travneve) and curator Lucy Nichai.
